An End-of-Life Doula is a non-medical professional who provides emotional, practical, and educational support to individuals and families as they navigate serious illness, dying, death, and the experiences surrounding the end of life.
Just as birth doulas help individuals and families prepare for and move through the beginning of life, End-of-Life Doulas provide a steady, supportive presence as someone approaches the end of life.
A doula’s role is not to replace hospice, medical professionals, therapists, clergy, or other members of your care team. Instead, they complement the care already being provided by focusing on the person and the people who love them.
What Does an End-of-Life Doula Do?
Every person, family, and end-of-life experience is different. Doula support is shaped around what matters most to you.
An End-of-Life Doula may help with:
Planning and Preparation
A doula can help you think through your wishes, priorities, concerns, and preferences so you and the people supporting you feel more prepared for what may come.
Education and Guidance
The end of life can bring unfamiliar decisions, experiences, and emotions. A doula can help explain what to expect, identify questions you may want to ask your care team, and connect you with additional resources when needed.
Emotional Support
Sometimes you need someone who will simply sit with you, listen without judgment, and make space for whatever you are experiencing. Doulas provide compassionate companionship for individuals and their loved ones.
Legacy and Meaning-Making
For some people, this may mean recording stories, writing letters, creating keepsakes, organizing photographs, having meaningful conversations, or finding other ways to celebrate a life and preserve what matters.
Vigil Support
As death approaches, a doula can provide a calm and reassuring presence for the individual and family. Depending on your needs, this may include companionship, helping create a peaceful environment, offering respite for caregivers, or simply being present so no one feels they must navigate the experience alone.
Support for Family and Caregivers
End-of-life care affects more than the person who is dying. A doula can support family members and caregivers as they manage responsibilities, emotions, uncertainty, and the practical realities of being present for someone they love.
What an End-of-Life Doula Does Not Do
End-of-Life Doulas provide non-medical support. A doula does not diagnose conditions, provide medical treatment, administer medications, replace hospice or healthcare professionals, provide legal advice, or make decisions on your behalf.
Instead, a doula will work alongside the people and professionals already supporting you. When a need falls outside the doula’s role, they can encourage you to connect with the appropriate healthcare, legal, mental health, spiritual, or community professional. And they know who you can reach out to.
You Do Not Have to Be Actively Dying to Work With a Doula
End-of-life support can begin long before the final days of life.
Some people reach out after receiving a serious or life-limiting diagnosis. Others want help with advance care planning while they are healthy. Families may seek support when caregiving becomes overwhelming, when circumstances change, or when they simply want to feel better prepared.
There is no single “right” time to begin these conversations.
A Different Kind of Support
Death is a universal part of life, but many of us have little experience talking about it or preparing for it. That can leave individuals and families feeling uncertain about what to do, what to ask, or what comes next. An End-of-Life Doula helps create space for those conversations. A doula cannot make every part of the journey easy. But they can help make it feel less unfamiliar, less overwhelming, and less lonely.
At Solace Sisters, we believe end-of-life care begins with listening: to your wishes, your values, your questions, your fears, your stories, and what matters most to you.
This is your life, your experience, and your story. Our role is to walk alongside you.
